life and other complications

on the eve of the millennium, this blog began as an attempt to sabotage my graduation from law school. it failed in that endeavor but bore out planning a New York City wedding... now, it's onto motherhood.

my thoughts on Ke$ha

she is clearly the love child of L'Trimm and, maybe also, with a touch of JJ Fad, though that may be giving Ke$ha way too lofty of a compliment because, seriously? the girl is kind of not a great singer. i give you, Tik Tok:

and the Cars That Go Boom:

if i knew how to do it, i would do a mash-up, which seems to be popular with the kids these days. (or so Glee would have me think, like *every* single episode).

television stars!

Botbw
so this morning, Band of Thieves rocked out on "I Know" (and a wee bit of "Woman") on the Fox Good Day New York (the early morning show on Fox5). they were introduced by Ron Burgundy Corning* and Jodi Applegate as the "hottest band on the indie-punk scene," and then they brought it!

and there will be even more to see on Good Day New York's "Press Play" site. so check it out! (a tape of the aired "I Know" as well as "Woman" and "Watch Out").

so watch out, yourself, because the rock might melt your face.

* this is Thurston's joke. full credit and all that.

watch some more tv, you lazy bum!

because if you do, you'll be treated to the smooth sounds of my brother-in-law and his (mostly mustachioed) Band of Thieves performing the ever-catchy Woman on Fearless Music.

Bot4
just tune into Fox5 this Saturday night (ok, technically superearly Sunday) at 1AM and let your ears do the rest of the work. and if you happen to have some hot Saturday night plans (as we do--dinner with the Hollster and the Garster at Stanton Social) or won't be up that late... well, that's what DVR is for. (like, duh!)

don't live in NYC? you can still find out when Fearless Music airs by checking out their web site: http://www.fearlessmusic.tv/

and if you want to be even cooler (and, who doesn't?) you should check out Band of Thieves at Bowery Ballroom on June 15th.

of course, T and i won't actually be there, because we'll be here with Laura and Ted:
Ritz_sj
but that doesn't necessarily mean that any of you should forego the opportunity for a rockin' good time.

better than the McDonald's Dollar Menu*

so you can now purchase a piece of my brother-in-law for a mere 99¢. well, sort of. that's because his new band, Band of Thieves, has their EP out on iTunes. how exciting??
so click here to download from iTunes (the three songs are Woman, Hey Hey and First Among Equals) and you too can rock out from the comfort of your own home/office.

(don't think this means i am going to stop plugging BoT's shows-- if i have to go, you all should come keep me company, or so i think).

another discovery i have made since i have been bedridden is this awesome show:
Daddy's Spoiled Little Girl
the episode i saw most recently is about a Long Island girl, Jamie Diamond, whose relationship with her dad is *seriously* disturbing. alas, there are no pictures of the dad (Wayne Diamond) that i can easily find, but he kind of reminds me of Vincent Libretti of Project Runway.

(but more leathery and more successful). he does share Vincent's use of the phrase "turns me on" when referring to outfits, which is even less palatable when Wayne uses it to refer to outfits being worn by his daughter (whose "nice tits" he also acknowledges).

ok, how did i miss this show when it came out a couple of years ago?? EvilA, how did you not tell me about this? (assuming you have seen it since you've seen everything...)

i think it re-airs again on Saturday at 10am, so you *have* to set your DVRs. for reals.

* ok, maybe not "better" but definitely lower-priced. after all, you can't eat a download. man, now all i want is some fries with that. (can you tell that i am back on a diet? ummm, yeah. with my virtual immobility, i am keeping calorie intake to a minimum lest they have to cut through a wall to get me out of here when the brace comes off...)

Band of Thieves will steal:

a) your heart; b) your cocktail; c) your girl; d) all of the above.

Bot_3

to find out, don’t miss their show this Monday, March 5, 2007 at 7:00pm at the Cutting Room*.

the show is FREE, but the experience will be priceless. for reals. and it’s on the early side, which is perfect for a weeknight. you can get your rock on and make curfew. it’s win, win.

for those of you who don’t know, Band of Thieves is T's brother's new project. (prior to this, he was in Midtown, if that gives you any frame of reference.**) they are seriously awesome and, for those of you who *do* know, for me to say *anyone* is awesome, let alone my brother-in-law, they’d have to be.

it's Southern rock with a current twist and is danceable, sing along-able and rock outable, if I do say so myself. we saw them last night and, as much as i hate standing, i couldn't think of sitting during their set. i especially love the song Woman, which has the lyric "Woman, you got a bad reputation..."  T always, charmingly, sings it to me as "Lovey, you got a bad reputation...", which is just plain mean, if not defamatory! (apparently, truth is a defense.)

as a (presumably) added enticement, Thurston and i will be there! and likely up for dinner afterward, if anyone's game.

the show will go on pretty promptly at 7:30, since this is a showcase and there is no opener. it's all Band of Thieves, all the time.  (at least for their set, which is probably fairly shy of an hour).

be there! you’ll be able to say you saw them when…

Monday

3/5/07

* Chris Noth owns this joint, so let that influence your decision how it will…

** though, i can't say it gave me any context, when Thurston used that line to try and "wow" me in our very first conversation.

i've been tagged

by Lola. and since this is the very first meme with which i have been tagged, i shall take it very seriously. here goes: My Vote for the 10 Worst Songs Ever (in no particular order)

  1. Don't Know Much this Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville collaboration actually makes me feel queasy. just thinking about it now. gah!
  2. Conga by Gloria Estefan honestly, almost anything by G.E. makes me want to cover my ears. this song particularly having been played at every single Bar/Bat Mitzvah i attended as a youth. (and is it any coincidence that she shares the same initials as my other musical nemesis, G.E. Smith? hmmm?)
  3. I've Got My Mind Set on You by George Harrison.
  4. Lullaby by Shawn Mullins. as Joles would say, gros.
  5. Into the Night by Benny Mardones - a fun statutory rape ditty. (nothing like Jermaine Stewart's awesome abstinence gem: We Don't Have to Take Our Clothes Off (To Have a Good Time)).
  6. Haitian Divorce by Steely Dan. for the record, i hate Steely Dan generally.
  7. Cats in the Cradle by Ugly Kid Joe (of that also-awful " i hate everything about you" song). i don't hate this song otherwise. just this version. nightmare!
  8. Songbird by Kenny G.
  9. Hard Day by George Michael (interchangeable with Monkey). maybe just because the rest of the album is so fricking great do these two songs seem so godawful. but they do.
  10. Rhythm is a Dancer by Snap!. this was omnipresent during my junior and senior uears of high school and if i never hear it again it will be too soon. so cheesy!

driving Mrs. Kennedy (or another night, another skipped workout)

well, almost. last night Thurston and i joined my family (sans the California sister) at the Riverkeeper annual dinner--a benefit to keep the Hudson River made of water rather than poison--at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers.

at the benefit, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. (who's on the Board of Directors) spoke and due to his presence there, his mom, Ethel Kennedy was also in attendance. the evening, emceed by Darrell Hammond (hysterical!) and featuring a performance by Carly Simon and her kids--Sally and Ben Taylor (sans their father James), ended at about 11:00 p.m. at that point one of the event planners asked my dad if he'd driven to the benefit. he had and was planning on driving back to the Upper East, after dropping me, T, my brother and his lady back at our apartment building* downtown.

the event planner asked my dad if he had room for Mrs. Kennedy, who needed a ride to UES and he promptly answered "of course," children be damned! we then hung out for a bit while my dad waited for his fare. i made him promise me he'd treat the car ride as a very Driving Miss Daisy experience, with my dad in the Morgan Freeman role and speaking only when spoken to. (i really thought that if my dad behaved, somehow my family would be weekending in Hyannis Port and the Vineyard in no time at all. i live a delusional life, what can i say...)

in any event, Mrs. Kennedy found another ride uptown and my parents were back to carpooling the riff-raff, viz., their own kids. such a shame! although our car was light on American royalty, the gift bags were heavy on the Kiehl's products. (yay!) and also included a Carly SImon cd. and also, to top off the evening, Carly sang Let the River Run, which is easily in my top ten songs ever. and she did it as a sing-along. love love love that one. and not just for its association with Tess McGill's triumph.

here are the empowering lyrics that i belt out with all my might on an almost daily basis. even when such singing is not at Carly's behest. (yeah, i'm supercool. you know it!)

We're coming to the edge, running on the water,
coming through the fog, your sons and daughters.
Let the river run, let all the dreamers wake the nation.
Come, the New Jerusalem.

Silver cities rise, the morning lights the streets that meet them,
and sirens call them on with a song.
It's asking for the taking.
Trembling, shaking.
Oh, my heart is aching,
We're coming to the edge, running on the water,
coming through the fog, your sons and daughters.

We the great and small, stand on a star and blaze a trail
of desire through the dark'ning dawn.
It's asking for the taking.
Come run with me now,
the sky is the color of blue
you've never even seen in the eyes of your lover.
Oh, my heart is aching.
We're coming to the edge, running on the water,
coming through the fog, your sons and daughters.

It's asking for the taking.
Trembling, shaking.
Oh, my heart is aching.
We're coming to the edge, running on the water,
coming through the fog, your sons and daughters.

Let the river run, let all the dreamers wake the nation.
Come, the New Jerusalem.* yes, i live in the same building as my little brother and his girlfriend. same apartment layout and everything. very convenient when it comes to borrowing sugar and DVDs.

well, hello, Dolly!

ok, this is some simple math: Dolly Parton + a cookbook = Perfection!!

i am so so so buying Dolly's new cookbook: Dolly's Dixie Fixin's how cute is that title? and what's better than an appliqued, jean-short wearing Dolly replete with hose and open-toe shoes hawking said book?

well, i'll tell you-- the opportunity to win a backyard barbecque with Truvy herself!!!! just by buying the book!!! i'm not a huge "OMG"-user, but OMG, how much would that RULE?? Dolly in my backyard? (ok, i have no backyard at present but would so coopt my parents' yard should i be lucky enough to win this awesome prize). honestly, the only way this could possibly be better were if Dolly would collaborate on a recipe with the chicken lovin' Kenny Rogers and create the culinary equivalent of "Islands in the Stream," the *best* *song* *ever*, fyi.

T, can we go to Dollywood for our honeymoon? pretty please? here are the lyrics for those of you too uncool to know them:

Baby, when I met you there was peace unknown,
I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb
I was soft inside, there was something going on

You do something to me that I can't explain,
Hold me closer and I feel no pain.
Every beat of my heart
We got something going on.

Tender love is blind,
It requires a dedication
All this love we feel needs no conversation
We can ride it together, aha
Making love with each other, aha

Islands in the stream
That is what we are
No one in between
How can we be wrong?
Sail away with me
To another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah

I can't live without you if the love was gone
Everything is nothing when you got no one
And you walk in the night,
Slowly losing sight of the real thing.

But that won't happen to us and we got no doubt,
Too deep in love and we got no way out
And the message is clear,
This could be the year for the real thing

No more will you cry,
Baby, I will hurt you never
We start and end as one,
In love forever.
We can ride it together, aha
Making love with each other, aha.

Islands in the stream
That is what we are
No one in between
How can we be wrong?
Sail away with me
To another world
And we rely on each other, ah ah
From one lover to another, ah ah

i apologize for the bifurcated Dolly-- that's how i had to grab the pics from her web site!
